AsChinacontinuestoriseasaglobalsuperpower,theimportanceofunderstandingChinesecultureandbeingabletoeffectivelycommunicatewithChinesepeoplebecomesincreasinglysignificant.However,fornon-nativeEnglish-speakinggraduatestudentsstudyingChineseculture,Englishlanguageproficiencycanposeachallengetoeffectivecommunication.Inthispaper,wewillexaminethechallengesnon-English-speakinggraduatestudentsfaceinexpressingChineseculturalconceptsinEnglish,andstrategiesforimprovingtheirEnglishlanguageproficiency.
TheChallengesofExpressingChineseCultureinEnglish
Oneofthemainchallengesthatnon-English-speakinggraduatestudentsfaceinexpressingChinesecultureinEnglishisthedifferencesinlanguagestructureandgrammar.ChinesegrammarissignificantlydifferentfromEnglishgrammar,whichcanmakeitdifficultforstudentstotranslateChineseideasandexpressionsintoEnglishaccuratelyandcoherently.Forinstance,Chinesesentencesarebuiltthroughtheuseofparticlesandcontext,whereasEnglishsentencesrelyonwordorderandtense.Also,idiomaticexpressionsinChinesedonotalwayshavedirecttranslationsinEnglish,whichcancauseconfusionandmiscommunication.
AnotherchallengeisthatstudentsmayhavedifficultyineffectivelyconveyingthedepthandrichnessofcomplexChineseculturalconceptsinawaythatwillresonatewithnon-Chinesespeakers.Forexample,manyaspectsofChineseculture,suchasConfucianism,Taoism,andtraditionalChinesemedicine,havenodirectequivalentinWesternculture,andthusrequiresignificantinterpretationandexplanationtobefullyunderstoodbynon-Chinesespeakers.
ImprovingEnglishLanguageProficiency
Toovercomethesechallenges,non-English-speakinggraduatestudentscantakeseveralspecificstepstoimprovetheirEnglishlanguageproficiency.
