Introduction
Englishisanessentialcomponentofinternationalcommunication,trade,andeducation.Fornon-English-speakingcountries,learningEnglishhasbeenregardedasasignificanttoolforachievingsuccess,especiallyintheglobalizationera.InChina,thereisagrowingdemandforEnglishasChinesepeoplerecognizetheimportanceofEnglishproficiencyinacademicandprofessionalfields.Therefore,thisstudyaimstoexploretheEnglishlanguageneedsofnon-EnglishMaster'sstudentsinChina.
Methodology
Thestudyutilizedamixed-methodsapproach.Asurveywasconductedamong50non-EnglishspeakingMaster'sstudentsfromvariousuniversitiesinChinausingaquestionnaire.Thesurveyaimedtoidentifytheparticipants'reasonsforlearningEnglish,theirEnglishlanguageproficiency,andtheareasinwhichtheyneedfurtherimprovement.Additionally,follow-upinterviewswereconductedwith10ofthesurveyparticipantstoobtaindeeperinsightsintotheirexperiences.
Results
ThesurveyresultsrevealedthattheprimaryreasonforlearningEnglishwastoadvancetheiracademicandcareerprospects.Furtheranalysisofthedatashowedthat56%oftheparticipantshadaverageEnglishproficiency,24%hadgoodproficiency,and20%hadpoorproficiency.Regardingtheareasforimprovement,62%oftheparticipantsidentifiedreadingasthemostchallengingaspect,followedbylistening(24%)andspeaking(14%).
Theinterviewresultsfurtherreinforcedthesurveyfindings.Participantsreporteddifficultiesinunderstandingacademictexts,particularlythosewithcomplexvocabularyandstructures.TheyexpressedfrustrationwiththelackofopportunitiestospeakEnglishandthefearofmakingmistakes.However,theyrecognizedtheimportanceofEnglishproficiencyintheiracademicandprofessionalpursuitsandwerewillingtolearnthroughvariousmethods,suchastakingEnglishcourses,watchingEnglishmovies,andlisteningtoEnglishsongs.
Discussion
Thefindingsofthisstudysuggestthatnon-EnglishMaster'sstudentsinChinahaveahighdemandforEnglishlanguageproficiency,mainlydrivenbyacademicandcareeropportunities.Whilemanyparticipantshaveaverageproficiency,readingwasidentifiedasaparticularlychallengingare
