Introduction
Vocabularyacquisitionisacriticalaspectoflanguagelearning,anditiscloselyrelatedtothelearners’proficiency.Therefore,studentsneedeffectivelearningstrategiestoacquirenewwordsquicklyandefficiently.Previousstudieshaveexploredtherelationshipbetweengender,Englishproficiency,andvocabularylearningstrategiesamongcollegestudents.Thispaperaimstoreviewtheexistingliteraturetounderstandthecorrelatesofthesefactorswithvocabularylearning.
GenderandVocabularyLearningStrategies
Severalstudieshavesuggestedthatgenderplaysasignificantroleinlanguagelearning,includingvocabularyacquisition.Althoughthefindingshavebeeninconsistent,somestudieshavesuggestedthatfemalesemploymoreeffectivevocabularylearningstrategiesthanmales.Incontrast,othersfoundnosignificantdifferencesoreventheoppositeresults.
OnestudyconductedbyZare-eeandGhavamnia(2015)examinedtherelationshipbetweengenderandvocabularylearningstrategiesusingasurveyquestionnaire.Theresultsoftheirstudyshowedthatfemalestudentsgenerallyusedmoreeffectivelearningstrategiesthanmalestudents.Moreover,theresearchersfoundthatfemalestudentsweremoremotivatedtolearnvocabularyandmorelikelytousememorystrategies,suchasrepetitionandassociation,thantheirmalecounterparts.

TherelationshipbetweenEnglishproficiencyandvocabularylearningstrategieshasbeenexaminedinmanystudies.Severalresearchershavenotedthatstudentswithhigherproficiencylevelstendtousemoreeffectivelearningstrategiesthanthosewithlowerproficiencylevels.Inotherwords,proficientlearnersaremoreawareoftheirlearningneedsandmorecapableofusingappropriatestrategiestomeetthoseneeds.
