Peer-to-peerVideoonDemand(P2P-VoD)systemshavegainedimmensepopularityduetotheirabilitytodistributevideocontentamongtheviewersinascalableandcost-effectiveway.Inthispaper,wewilldiscussthedesignandimplementationofthePeer-endofaP2P-VoDsystem.
ThePeer-endoftheP2P-VoDsystemhastoperformasetoffunctionstoensurethattheviewerscanaccessthevideocontentseamlessly.Theprimarytasksofthepeer-endinclude,butarenotlimitedto,contentdiscovery,contentrequesthandling,contentmanagement,andcontentdelivery.Letusdiscussthesefunctionsindetail:
1.ContentDiscovery:ThePeer-endmusthaveamechanismtofindthedesiredcontentamongtheavailablepeers.Usually,thePeer-endperformsasearchoperationamongtheconnectedpeerstofindtheonewiththedesiredcontent.Thesearchoperationmayincludeapeerlistexchangebetweentheconnectedpeersandtheuseofadistributedhashtable(DHT)toefficientlylocatethedesiredcontent.
2.ContentRequestHandling:OncethedesiredcontentislocatedbythePeer-end,ithastohandlethecontentrequestfromtheviewer.ThePeer-endmustnegotiatewiththeotherpeersinthenetworktoobtainthecontentpiecesrequiredtodelivertherequestedcontenttotheviewer.ThePeer-endmustalsomonitortheuploadanddownloadtraffictoensurethatthenetworkresourcesareefficientlyutilized.
3.ContentManagement:ThePeer-endmustmanagethecontentitstoresandthecontentitobtainsfromotherpeers.ThePeer-endmusthaveamechanismtokeeptrackofthecontentpiecesithas,thecontentitneeds,andthecontentitcanprovidetootherpeers.ThePeer-endmustalsoimplementacontentreplicationstrategytoensurethatthecontentisalwaysavailabletotheviewers.
4.ContentDelivery:ThePeer-endmustdeliverthecontenttothevieweronceithasobtainedallthedesiredcontentpieces.ThePeer-endmustalsoensurethatthedeliveredcontentisofgoodquality,anditisplayedsmoothlywithoutanybufferingorlatencyissues.
Toimplementthesefunctions,thePeer-endcanbedesignedusingdifferentarchitecturesandprotocols.Someofthecommonlyusedarchitecturesare:
