Introduction
AsamasterworkofChineseliterature,TheTrueStoryofAhQhasbeentranslatedintomanydifferentlanguages.Duetothedifferencesofculturalbackground,someculture-ladenwordsandexpressionsaredifficulttobeadequatelytranslatedintoEnglish,whichposesagreatchallengetotranslators.Therefore,thispaperaimstoanalyzethetranslationstrategiesoftwoEnglishtranslationsofTheTrueStoryofAhQfromtheperspectiveofculture-ladenwords,whichcouldhelpushaveabetterunderstandingoftranslationandcross-culturalcommunication.
Culture-LadenWordsinTheTrueStoryofAhQ
Culture-ladenwordsrefertowordsorexpressionsthatconveytheculturalelementsofthesourcelanguage,whicharedifficulttobecomprehendedortranslatedintothetargetlanguage.TheTrueStoryofAhQ,asaclassicworkofChineseliterature,isfullofsuchwordsandexpressions.Forinstance,theword“AhQ”istheabbreviationof“AhQuei,”whichisatypicaldialectnameintheShandongarea.Anotherexampleistheword“xinyong”(信用),whichmeansnotonly“trust”or“credit,”butalsoinvolvestheConfucianconceptofmoralreputationandsocialstatus.
TranslationStrategiesofTwoEnglishTranslations
ThetwoEnglishtranslationsofTheTrueStoryofAhQanalyzedinthisessayaretheversionbyYangXianyiandGladysYang,andtheversionbyDavidHawkes.Asforthetranslationofculture-ladenwords,YangandYangadoptedthestrategyoffootnotesandexplanation,whileHawkestriedtofindequivalentEnglishwordstoreplacetheoriginalChineseones.
Ontheonehand,YangandYangbelievedthatsomeculture-ladenwordscouldnotbetranslatedperfectlyintoEnglish,thustheyaddedfootnotesandexplanationstoprovidemoreinformationforreaders.Forexample,intheirversion,theynotedthattheShandongdialectword“AhQ,”whichwasdifficulttotranslate,isacommonnameinsomepartsofChina,andthatitcouldalsoimplyacertainkindofpersonalityorbehavior.Thisstrategycouldhelpreaderstounderstandthemeaningsofthesecomplexwords,butitinevitablymakesthereadingprocessinconvenientandinterruptsthereader'simmersioninthetext.
