Abstract
Anewspeciesoftapeworm,isolatedfromthegreyhamster,hasbeendescribedandstudiedforitslifehistory.ThetapewormhasbeenidentifiedasaspeciesofHymenolepis,andhasbeennamedHymenolepishamsterin.sp.Thelifecycleofthetapewormhasbeenstudied,andithasbeenfoundthattheintermediatehostisaflea.
Introduction
Tapewormsareagroupofparasiticflatwormsthatinfectvertebrates,includinghumansandanimals.ThetapewormsbelongtothephylumPlatyhelminthesandarecharacterizedbytheirflattened,ribbon-likebody.Theyareamongthemostcommonparasitesfoundinthegastrointestinaltractofanimalsandhumans.Thetapewormshaveacomplexlifecyclethattypicallyinvolvesseveralhosts,includingaprimaryhostandoneormoreintermediatehosts.
Inthisstudy,anewspeciesoftapewormhasbeenisolatedfromthegreyhamster.Thetapewormisdescribedandstudiedforitslifehistory.
MaterialsandMethods
Hamsterswerecollectedfromalocalpetstoreandweredissectedtoisolatethetapeworms.Thetapewormsweremeasuredfortheirsize,andtheirmorphologicalfeatureswerestudiedunderanelectronmicroscope.ThetapewormswerethenidentifiedasHymenolepisandwerenamedHymenolepishamsterin.sp.
Thelifecycleofthetapewormwasstudiedbyinfectingdomesticfleaswitheggsofthetapewormandobservingthedevelopmentofthetapeworminthefleas.Theinfectedfleaswerethenfedtohamsters,andthedevelopmentofthetapeworminthehamsterswasobserved.
Results
Morphologicalfeaturesofthetapeworm
Thetapewormisasmalltapewormthatmeasuresabout1.6-2.2cminlengthandabout0.3-0.6mminwidth.Thescolex,whichistheanteriorportionofthetapeworm,hasfoursuckersandonerostellum,whichisusedforattachmenttothehost’sintestinalwall.Thebodyofthetapewormiscomposedofseveralproglottids,eachofwhichcontainsmaleandfemalereproductiveorgans.

Thelifecycleofthetapeworminvolvesonedefinitivehost,thegreyhamster,andoneintermediatehost,theflea.Theadulttapeworms,whichresideinthehamster’sintestines,releaseeggsthatarepassedoutwiththefeces.Theeggsareingestedbyfleas,whichserveastheintermediatehosts.Intheflea’sgut,theeggshatchtoformoncosph
