Introduction
Translationisacomplexandchallengingprocessthatinvolvesthetransferofmeaningfromonelanguagetoanother.Asaresult,someelementsofthesourcelanguagemaynothaveadirectequivalentinthetargetlanguage,leadingtotheconceptof“untranslatability”.ThispaperaimstoexploretheissueofuntranslatabilityinChinese-Englishtranslationandexaminethewaysinwhichtranslatorscancompensateforthisissue.
UntranslatabilityinChinese-EnglishTranslation
Untranslatabilityreferstotheinabilitytofindanexactequivalentofasourcelanguageelementinthetargetlanguage.ThisissuecommonlyarisesinChinese-Englishtranslationduetothesignificantdifferencesbetweenthetwolanguagesintermsofgrammar,syntax,andculturalcontext.ExamplesofuntranslatableelementsinChinese-Englishtranslationincludeidioms,figurativelanguage,metaphors,andculturalreferences.
CompensatingforUntranslatability
Translatorscancompensateforuntranslatabilitybyutilizingvarioustechniques,includingborrowing,adaptation,explanation,andsubstitution.
1.Borrowing
Borrowinginvolvesthedirectuseofawordorphrasefromthesourcelanguageinthetargetlanguage.ThistechniqueiscommoninChinese-Englishtranslation,especiallywhentranslatingtechnicaltermsorpropernouns.Forexample,theChineseword“fengshui”hasbeenborrowedintoEnglishwithlittleadaptation.
2.Adaptation
Adaptationinvolvesmodifyingthesourcelanguageelementtofitthetargetlanguageandculture.ThistechniqueiscommonlyusedinChinese-Englishtranslationtotranslateidioms,proverbs,andfolktales.Forexample,theChineseidiom“yishizhongxin”(meaning“onestone,twobirds”)canbeadaptedtotheEnglishidiom“killtwobirdswithonestone”.
3.Explanation
Explanationinvolvesprovidingadditionalinformationtoclarifythemeaningofasourcelanguageelementfortargetlanguagereaders.ThistechniqueiscommonlyusedinChinese-Englishtranslationtotranslateculturalreferences,suchastheChineseconceptof“guanxi”(meaning“connections”).Forexample,atranslatormightaddafootnoteexplainingtheconceptof“guanxi”toanEnglish-languagetext.
