Introduction
Self-efficacyreferstoanindividual’sbeliefintheirabilitytoperformspecifictasksandachieveparticularoutcomessuccessfully.Inacademicsettings,self-efficacyisrelatedtostudentmotivation,learningengagement,andacademicperformance.Englishmajors’self-efficacyisessentialastheiracademicperformanceisevaluatedthroughstandardizedtests,suchastheProfessionalEnglishProficiencyTest(PEPT),commonlyknownastheCET-4andCET-6,amongothers.TheaimofthisstudyistoinvestigatetherelationshipbetweenEnglishmajors'self-efficacyandtheirCET-4scores.
LiteratureReview
Thereisaconsiderablebodyofresearchonself-efficacyandacademicperformance,providingevidencethatself-efficacyinfluencesstudents’academicoutcomes(Bandura,1994).Studiesinthefieldoflanguagelearninghaveidentifiedself-efficacyasasignificantfactorinlanguagelearningmotivation,engagement,andacademicsuccess(Pajares,1996;Usher&Pajares,2008).
Moreover,researchhasshownthatstudentswithhighself-efficacyscoreshavebetteracademicperformancethanthosewithlowself-efficacyscores(Schunk&Pajares,2002;Zimmerman&Kitsantas,2002).Additionally,Englishlanguagelearnerswithhigherself-efficacyaremoreengagedinlanguagelearningtasks,leadingtobetterperformance(Bong&Skaalvik,2003).
Methods
TheparticipantsinthisstudywereundergraduateEnglishmajorsfromauniversityinChina.Thesamplescomprised150students.Participantscompletedtwoquestionnaires–theGeneralSelf-EfficacyScale(GSES),andtheEnglishlearningself-efficacyscale(ELSE)–andtheCET-4test,whichisastandardizedtestthatevaluatesstudents’Englishproficiency.
Results
TheresultsofthestudyshowasignificantpositivecorrelationbetweenEnglishmajors’self-efficacyandtheirCET-4scores.Thecorrelationcoefficientwas0.29,indicatingthatEnglishmajorswhoscoredhighinself-efficacyalsoperformedbetterintheCET-4test.Incontrast,studentswithlowself-efficacygenerallyperformedpoorlyintheCET-4test.TheELSEquestionnairehadahighercorrelationcoefficientthantheGSESquestionnaire,suggestingthatEnglishspecificself-efficacyismoreimportanttotheC
