Background Readingstrategiesarecognitiveandmetacognitiveprocessesthatreadersusetocomprehendatext.Effectiveuseofreadingstrategiescanfacilitatecomprehensionandsupportthelearningofnewinformation.Readingstrategiescanbecategorizedintothreemaintypes: 1.Globalstrategies:Thesestrategieshelpreaderstounderstandtheoverallideasandthemesofatext. 2.Supportstrategies:Thesestrategiesassistreadersinprocessinginformationsuchasvocabularyandsyntax. 3.Problem-solvingstrategies:Thesestrategieshelpreaderstoaddresschallengesanddifficultiesencounteredwhilereading. ResearchQuestions Thefollowingresearchquestionsguidedthisstudy: 1.Whatreadingstrategiesdonon-EnglishmajorundergraduatestudentsusewhenreadingacademictextsinEnglish? 2.Whatfactorsinfluencetheuseofreadingstrategiesbynon-EnglishmajorundergraduatestudentswhenreadingacademictextsinEnglish? Methodology Thisstudyusedamixed-methodsresearchdesign,incorporatingqualitativeandquantitativedatacollectionandanalysis.Thestudyparticipantswere120non-EnglishmajorundergraduatestudentsenrolledinaChineseuniversity.Thestudentswererequestedtocompleteasurveyquestionnaireandparticipateinafocusgroupinterview. Results Theresultsofthisstudyrevealedthatnon-EnglishmajorundergraduatestudentsusedavarietyofreadingstrategieswhenreadingacademictextsinEnglish.Themajorityoftheparticipantsreportedusingsupportstrategiessuchascheckingthemeaningofunfamiliarwordsandre-reading.Afewparticipantsreportedusingglobalstrategiessuchasscanningandskimming.Thefindingsalsorevealedthattheuseofreadingstrategieswasinfluencedbyseveralfactors,includingthedifficultylevelofthetext,motivation,andtimeavailability.
