Introduction
Researchershavelongbeeninterestedintherelationshipbetweentheamountofinputalanguagelearnerreceivesandtheacquisitionofvocabulary.Vocabularyacquisitionisanessentialcomponentoflanguagelearning,andithasbeenshownthattheextentofalearner'svocabularycanimpacttheiroveralllanguageproficiency(Schmitt,2008).Inthispaper,wewillexploretheeffectoftheamountofreadinginputonincidentalvocabularyacquisition,specificallyfocusingontheroleofextensivereadinginvocabularyacquisition.
ExtensiveReading
Extensivereadingisareadingpracticethatinvolvesreadingalargeamountoftext,withthegoalofimprovingreadingcomprehension,vocabulary,andoveralllanguageproficiency(Nation,2009).Studieshaveconsistentlyshownthatextensivereadingcanleadtoimprovementsinvocabularyknowledgeforsecondlanguagelearners(Horst,Cobb,&Meara,1998;Pigada&Schmitt,2006;Vickery&Reynolds,1998).
IncidentalVocabularyAcquisition
Incidentalvocabularyacquisitionreferstotheprocessofacquiringnewwordsthroughexposuretolanguage,withoutspecificallystudyingordeliberatelymemorizingthem(Hulstijn&Laufer,2001).Researchhasshownthatincidentalvocabularyacquisitionishighlydependentontheamountandtypeofinputthatlearnersreceive(Schmitt,2008).Forexample,learnerswhoareexposedtomorelanguageinputarelikelytoacquiremorevocabularywordsincidentally.
EffectofReadingInputonVocabularyAcquisition
Theamountofinputthatlearnersreceivefromreadingcanhaveasignificantimpactonincidentalvocabularyacquisition.Forexample,researchhasshownthatlearnerswhoengageinextensivereadingaremorelikelytoacquirevocabularyincidentallythanthosewhoengageinmorelimitedreading(Alderson&Urquhart,1984;Pigada&Schmitt,2006).
However,therelationshipbetweenreadinginputandvocabularyacquisitionmaynotbestraightforward.Onekeyfactorthatcanimpacttheeffectivenessofreadinginputisthenatureoftheinputitself.Researchershavefoundthatthefrequencyanddistributionofvocabularyitemswithinatextcanimpactvocabularyacquisition(Waring,1997).Additionally,thepresenceofspecificcontextualcuescanalsofacilitatevo
