Introduction
Heavymetalsareoneofthemostsignificantenvironmentalpollutantsworldwide.Humanactivitieslikeindustrialization,mining,andagriculturehaveincreasedtheamountofheavymetalsinthesoil,whichcanleadtoserioushealthproblems.Heavymetalslikecadmium,lead,copper,andzincaretoxicandcanaccumulateinagriculturalproducts.Theseheavymetalsaresubsequentlytransferredtothehumanbodythroughthefoodchain.Vegetables,whichformanessentialcomponentofthehumandiet,areparticularlypronetocontaminationwithheavymetalsduetotheirabilitytouptakethesetoxicsubstancesfromthesoil.
Therefore,itisnecessarytoevaluatetheaccumulationofheavymetalsincropstominimizehumanexposure.Thepresentstudyaimedtoinvestigatethedifferencesintheaccumulationofcadmium,lead,copper,andzincinfourcommonlygrownvegetables(spinach,lettuce,cucumber,andcarrot)incompositepollutedsoils.Theobjectivesofthisstudyaretodeterminetheconcentrationofheavymetalsinthesoilandvegetables,toevaluatethepotentialhealthrisk,andtounderstandthedifferencesintheaccumulationofheavymetalsinvegetables.
Methods
Soilsampleswerecollectedfromagriculturallandsnearindustrialandminingareas,whichhavehighlevelsofpollutionbyheavymetals.Vegetables(spinach,lettuce,cucumber,andcarrot)weregrownusingthecollectedsoilsamples.Soilwasanalyzedforheavymetalcontentusingatomicabsorptionspectrophotometry.Thevegetableswereharvestedaftereightweeks,andtheirheavymetalconcentrationwasdeterminedusingasimilarmethod.
Results
Theresultsofthestudyrevealedthatthesoilsamplescollectedfromtheagriculturallandnearindustrialandminingareascontainedhigherlevelsofheavymetals(cadmium,lead,copper,andzinc)thanthesoilcollectedfromnon-pollutedareas.Theaccumulatedconcentrationofheavymetalswasfoundtobedifferentindifferentvegetables.Theaccumulationofcadmiumandleadinspinachandlettucewashigherthanthatincucumberandcarrot.Copperaccumulationwashighestincucumber,followedbyspinach,lettuce,andcarrot.Theaccumulationofzincwashighestinlettuceandspinach,followedbycucumberandcarrot.
