Introduction
Subseapipelinesareessentialforthetransportationofoilandgasfromoffshoreproductionsitestoonshorefacilities.Thepipelinesareusuallymadeofmetallicorpolymericmaterialsthataresusceptibletodamagefromharshenvironmentalconditionssuchassaltwatercorrosion,mechanicalstress,andimpact.Theinsulationsystemisusedtoprotectthepipelinesfromthesedamagingconditions.Theinsulationsystemforsubseapipelinescanbeclassifiedintosingle-layerinsulationanddouble-layerinsulation.Thedouble-layerinsulationsystemiswidelyadoptedduetoitshigherinsulationperformance,whichisachievedthroughtheuseoftwolayersofthermalinsulationmaterial.Inthisstudy,wefocusontheinterlayershearcapacityofsingle-layerthermalinsulationforsubseapipelines.
Literaturereview
Theinterlayershearcapacityofthedouble-layerthermalinsulationsystemhasbeenthoroughlyinvestigatedinpreviousstudies.However,thereisalackofresearchontheshearcapacityofthesingle-layerinsulationsystem.Theinterlayershearcapacityisacriticalmechanicalpropertyoftheinsulationsystem,asshearforcescanoccurwhenthepipelineexperiencesbendingorlateraldisplacement.Alowershearcapacitycanleadtodelaminationoftheinsulationlayersandultimately,thefailureoftheinsulationsystem.
Methods
Inthisstudy,weconductedafull-scaleindoortesttoinvestigatetheinterlayershearcapacityofsingle-layerthermalinsulationforsubseapipelines.Thetestsetupinvolvesapipelinesectionwithalengthof3metersandanouterdiameterof0.2meters.Thepipelinesectioniscoatedwithasingle-layerthermalinsulationmaterialthatis50mmthick.Thetestinvolvestheapplicationofashearloadontheinsulationsystemusingahydraulicactuator.Theshearloadisappliedtoonesideoftheinsulationsystemwhiletheothersideisfixedtoasupportstructure.
Theinterlayershearcapacityoftheinsulationsystemisevaluatedbymeasuringtheshearstressandsheardisplacementduringthetest.Theshearstressvaluesareobtainedusingstraingaugesattachedtothesurfaceoftheinsulationsystem.Thesheardisplacementvaluesareobtainedusingadisplacementtransducerattachedtotheendoftheshearlo
