MicrostructuralControlandOptimizationofMagneticThermalPropertiesinHighEntropyAmorphousAlloys
Abstract:
Highentropyamorphousalloys(HEAs)areanewclassofmaterialswithpromisingmechanical,chemical,andphysicalproperties.Inrecentyears,studieshaveshownthatHEAshavepotentialforachievinghighmagneticthermalperformance,whichisimportantforapplicationsinvariousfieldssuchasenergyharvesting,energystorage,andmagneticcooling.ThispaperaimstoreviewtherecentprogressmadeincontrollingandoptimizingmicrostructuretoenhancemagneticthermalpropertiesinHEAs.
Introduction:
HEAsarealloyscomposedofmultipleconstituentsinequimolarornearequimolarratios.Thesealloyshaveauniquecrystalstructure,wheretherandomnessoftheatomicarrangementgivesrisetoanamorphousphase.ThisamorphousnaturemakesHEAshighlyresistanttodeformationandfracture,andhence,havesuperiormechanicalpropertiescomparedtotraditionalmaterials.Inadditiontotheirexcellentmechanicalproperties,HEAshavereceivedsignificantattentioninrecentyearsduetotheirpotentialforachievinghighmagneticthermalperformance.
MagneticThermalPropertiesofHEAs:
HEAsexhibituniquemagneticpropertiessuchashighcoercivity,highmagneticanisotropy,andlargemagneticentropychange(ΔS).Amongtheseproperties,ΔSisakeyparameterthatdeterminestheeffectivenessofHEAsinmagneticcoolingapplications.ΔSisrelatedtothechangeinmagneticentropywhenamagneticfieldisappliedorremovedfromthematerial.AlargeΔSvaluemeansthatthematerialcanexperienceasignificanttemperaturechangewhenexposedtoamagneticfield,whichisusefulformagneticrefrigeration.
MicrostructuralControlandOptimization:
ThemicrostructureofHEAsplaysacriticalroleindeterminingtheirmagneticthermalproperties.Therefore,controllingandoptimizingthemicrostructureisessentialtoenhancetheirmagneticperformance.Severalapproacheshavebeenproposedtoachievethis,includingalloying,crystallization,andnanostructuring.
