Mathematicsisoftenconsideredasachallengingsubjectbymanystudents,anditsimpactontheiracademicperformancecannotbeignored.Inahighacademicsetting,mathematicsremainsoneofthecoresubjectsthatstudentsmustattainasatisfactorygradeintoqualifyforfurtheracademicpursuits.Overtheyears,academicsandresearchershaveattemptedtoidentifythefactorsthatinfluencemathematicsachievementamongstudents.Thepurposeofthispaperistoanalyzetheempiricalfactorsthataffectcollegestudents'mathematicsscores.

ResearcherssuchasSui,Martinez,andPaek(2017)arguethatmathematicsperformanceisinfluencedbyacombinationofanindividual'sintelligence,motivation,interest,andstudyhabits.Thelevelofeffortandcommitmentputbystudentstoimprovetheirskillsandabilitytounderstandthesubjectisessential.Itisalsoimportanttoconsideranindividual'sintelligence,whichgreatlyimpactstheirabilitytounderstandmathematicalconcepts.Theabilitytograspmathematicalconceptsatarapidpacecanbeattributedtoastudent'scognitiveperformance,whichpotentiallyincreasestheirproblem-solvingandcriticalthinkingskills.
Inaddition,anindividual'smotivationandinterestinmathematicssignificantlyinfluencetheiracademicperformance.Studentswhofindmathinterestingandrelevanttotheirfuturecareerambitionsarelikelytoputmoreeffortintolearningthesubjectmatter.Thelearningoutcomesofmotivatedstudentsaresignificantlyhigherthanthosewholackit.Researchershavefurtherarguedthatthetypeofeducationalenvironmentsignificantlyaffectsastudent'smotivationandinterestinmathematics(Mandell&Pehkonen,2013).
Furthermore,thequalityofteachinghasasignificanteffectontheacademicachievementofstudents.Thecompetenceandmotivationofinstructorsindeliveringthesubjectmatterineasy-to-understandwayscanhelpstudentsinachievingbetterscoresinmathematics(Persson&Sveningsson,2018).Researchalsoindicatesthatclasssize,qualityoftextbooks,andinstructionalresourcesplaysaninstrumentalroleinguidinglearnersthroughmathematics(Mellado,Deanes,Soto&Lagos,2018).
