Introduction
RTEMS(Real-TimeExecutiveforMultiprocessorSystems)isanopen-sourcereal-timeoperatingsystem(RTOS)thatwasoriginallydevelopedattheSystemsandCommunicationsDivisionofNASA.Ithasbeenusedinawiderangeofapplications,includingaerospace,automotive,industrialautomation,andmedicaldevices.ThispaperaimstoexploretheresearchandengineeringapplicationsofRTEMS.
OverviewofRTEMS
RTEMSisdesignedtoprovidereal-timescheduling,synchronization,andcommunicationservicesforembeddedsystems.Itsupportsavarietyofprocessorarchitectures,includingARM,PowerPC,SPARC,andx86.UnlikesomeotherRTOSs,RTEMSprovidesaconsistentAPIacrossallsupportedarchitectures,whichsimplifiesapplicationdevelopmentandporting.
RTEMSalsoincludesacomprehensivesetoftoolsforsystemconfiguration,debugging,andprofiling.TheRTEMSConfigurationTool(RTEMS-CT)allowsuserstocustomizetheirsystemconfigurationbyselectingthefeaturesandservicestheyrequire.TheRTEMSDebugger(rdbg)providesagraphicalinterfacefordebuggingRTEMSapplications,whiletheRTEMSProfilingTool(rld)allowsuserstoanalyzesystemperformanceinreal-time.
Inadditiontothesefeatures,RTEMSsupportsavarietyofcommunicationprotocols,includingPOSIXsockets,CANbus,andSerialPeripheralInterface(SPI).Thismakesitwell-suitedforapplicationsthatrequireinter-processcommunication(IPC)ornetworkconnectivity.
ResearchApplicationsofRTEMS
RTEMShasbeenusedinawiderangeofresearchapplications,includingrobotics,real-timeimageprocessing,anddistributedcontrolsystems.OneexampleistheworkofHuangetal.(2013),whodevelopedareal-timevisionsystemforanautonomousunderwatervehicle(AUV)usingRTEMS.Thesystemusedtwocamerastocaptureunderwaterimages,whichwereprocessedinreal-timetodetectobstaclesandtrackthevehicle'smotion.Theauthorsreportedthatthesystemachievedaprocessingspeedofupto9framespersecond,whichissufficientforreal-timeapplications.
AnotherexampleistheworkofLeeetal.(2015),whousedRTEMStodevelopadistributedcontrolsystemforasmartgrid.Thesystemwasdesignedtocoordinatetheoperationofmultiplepowergeneratorsandstoragedevic
