Introduction
Flexisapopulartechnologyusedforcreatingrich,interactiveapplicationsfortheweb.Itisanopen-sourceframework,meaningthatitisfreetouseandissupportedbyalargeandactivecommunity.Inthispaper,wewillexploretheuseofFlextechnologytodevelopaGraphicalEditingFramework(GEF)thatcanbeusedforcreatingandeditinggraphicaldiagrams.
OverviewofGraphicalEditingFramework(GEF)
GraphicalEditingFramework(GEF)isaJava-basedframeworkthathelpsdeveloperstocreateandeditgraphicaldiagrams.GEFprovidesasetofreusablecomponentsandamodel-view-controllerarchitectureforcreatinggraphicaluserinterfaces(GUIs).Themodelrepresentsthedata,theviewdisplaysthedata,andthecontrollerhandlesuserinput.GEFisusedtocreategraphicaldiagramssuchasflowcharts,UMLdiagrams,andnetworkdiagrams.
TheAdvantagesofUsingFlexTechnologyforGEF
FlextechnologyprovidesanumberofadvantagesfordevelopingGEFapplications.Firstly,FlexprovidesarichsetofcontrolsandapowerfullayoutenginethatmakesiteasytocreatecomplexGUIs.Secondly,Flexallowsforthecreationofhighlyinteractiveapplicationswithsmoothtransitionsandanimations.ThesefeaturesareespeciallyimportantinaGEFapplication,astheuserneedstobeabletomanipulatethediagramwitheaseandseetheresultsoftheiractionsimmediately.
Thirdly,Flexapplicationscanbeeasilyintegratedwithothertechnologies,suchasJavaor.NET,allowingfortheseamlessintegrationofGEFwithothersystems.Fourthly,Flexiscross-platformandcanbeusedondesktops,tablets,andsmartphones,makingitaversatiletechnologyfordevelopingGEFapplications.

ThemodelrepresentsthedatathatisbeingdisplayedintheGEFapplication.Inourcase,themodelrepresentsthegraphicaldiagramthatisbeingcreatedandedited.Themodelisimplementedasasetofclassesthatdefinetheobjectsthatmakeupthediagram,suchasnodes,edges,andlabels.
