CarlDiem,chairmanoftheorganizingcommitteeforthe1936BerlinGames,proposedthattheflamebelitinGreeceandtransportedtoBerlinviaatorchrelay.TheideawasadotedandcontinuedateveryOlypicGamessince1952.TheflameislitattheancientsiteofOlympiabythenaturalsofthesunreflectedoffacarvedmirror.
TheOlympicmotto“Citius,altius,fortius”isaLatinphrasemeaning“swifter,higher,stronger”,whichBarondeCoubertinborrowedfromFatherHenriDideonofParis.DideonwasthehesdmasterofArcueilCollege,andusedthephrasetodescribetheathleticachievementsofstudentsattheschool.HehadpreviouslybeenattheAlbertLeGrandSchool,wheretheLatinwordswerecarvedinthestoneabovethemainentrance..
TheOlympicoath“Inthenameofallcompetitors,IpromisethatweshalltakepartintheseOlympicGames,respectingandabidingbytherulesthatgovernthem,inthetruespiritofsportsmanship,forthegloryofsportandthehonorofourteams.”WrittenbyBarondeCoubertin,theoathistakenbyanathletefromthehostnationwhileholdingacorneroftheOlympicflag.Theathlete’soathwasfirsttakenbyBelgianfencerVictorBoinatthe1920AntwerpGames.Ajudgefromthehostcountryalsospeakstheoath,withslightlydifferentwording.
