OptimizationofUltrasoundParametersforPromotingBiofilmRemovalinDrinkingWaterSupplyPipelines
Introduction
Drinkingwatersupplypipelinesareessentialinfrastructureinensuringthatsafeandcleanwaterisavailableforconsumption.However,thepresenceofbiofilmsinthesepipelinescancompromisethequalityandsafetyofthewater.Biofilmsarecomplexcommunitiesofmicroorganismsthatattachandgrowonthesurfaceofthepipelines.Theyareresilienttotraditionalcleaningmethodssuchaschemicaltreatmentsandphysicalbrushing,andcancauseawiderangeofproblemssuchasclogging,corrosion,andmicrobialcontamination.Therefore,thereisaneedforamoreefficientandeffectivemethodtoremovebiofilmsindrinkingwatersupplypipelines.Ultrasoundhasemergedasapromisingtechnologythatcaneffectivelydisruptbiofilmstructureandpromotedetachment.Thispaperaimstooptimizetheultrasoundparametersforpromotingbiofilmremovalindrinkingwatersupplypipelines.
Theoryandmechanismofultrasoundtreatment
Ultrasoundisanon-invasiveandenvironmentallyfriendlytechnologythatuseshigh-frequencysoundwaves(>20kHz)togeneratemechanicalvibrationsinliquids.Themechanicalvibrationscreatepressurewavesthatproducecavitationbubblesintheliquid.Whenthebubblescollapse,theycreatelocalizedhightemperatures(>5000K)andpressures(1000atm)thatgenerateshockwaves.Theseshockwavescancausephysicaldamagetothebiofilmstructureandpromotedetachmentfromthepipelinesurface.Inaddition,ultrasoundcanalsoenhancethepenetrationofcleaningagentsintothebiofilmandincreasetheefficacyofchemicaltreatments.
Experimentalmethod
Theexperimentalmethodinvolvesthepreparationofbiofilmsamplesusingamixedcultureofbacteriacommonlyfoundindrinkingwatersupplypipelines,suchasPseudomonasaeruginosaandEscherichiacoli.Thebiofilmswereallowedtogrowfor7daysonstainlesssteelcouponsbeforebeingsubjectedtoultrasoundtreatment.Theultrasoundexperimentswerecarriedoutusinga40kHzpiezoelectrictransducercoupledtoatitaniumhorn.Thehornwasplacedinsideaflowcellcontainingthebiofilmsample,andtheultrasoundtreatmentwasappliedatvaryingamplitu
