Introduction:
Voronoidiagramsareafundamentalconceptincomputationalgeometryandhavenumerousapplicationsinfieldsrangingfromengineeringtobiology.Thesediagramscanbeusedtorepresentawidevarietyofstructures,includingthemicrostructureofmaterialsusedinadditivemanufacturing.Inthispaper,wewillexplorehowVoronoidiagramscanbeusedinthecontextofmicrovolumeadditivemanufacturingtodevelopnumericalmodelsandverifytheiraccuracy.
Background:
Microvolumeadditivemanufacturing(MAM)isanemergingfieldthatseekstocreatemicroscalestructuresusingadditivemanufacturingtechniques.MAMhasnumerousapplications,suchascreatingmicroneedlesfordrugdelivery,microfluidicsystemsforlab-on-a-chipapplications,andmicroscaleheatexchangersforcoolingelectronics.
OneoftheprimarychallengesofMAMisdevelopingaccuratenumericalmodelstopredictthepropertiesoftheprintedstructures.Thecomplexmicrostructuresofthesestructuresmakeanalyticalmethodsimpractical,andthereforenumericalmodelingisessential.OnepromisingapproachtodevelopingthesemodelsistouseVoronoidiagramstorepresentthemicrostructureoftheprintedobject.
Voronoidiagrams:
AVoronoidiagramisageometricstructurethatdividesspaceintoregionsbasedonthedistancetoasetofpoints.TheseregionsarecalledVoronoicellsandaredefinedasthesetofallpointsthatareclosertoaparticularpointthananyotherpointintheset.TheboundariesbetweenVoronoicellsarecalledVoronoiedges,andthepointsthatdefinetheseedgesarecalledVoronoivertices.
Voronoidiagramshavenumerousapplications,suchascalculatingthenearestneighbordistancesinasetofpoints,identifyingregionsofinfluenceforeachpointinaset,andapproximatingthesurfaceareaofasetofpoints.
NumericalmodelingusingVoronoidiagrams:
InthecontextofMAM,Voronoidiagramscanbeusedtorepresentthemicrostructureoftheprintedobject.TheVoronoicellscanbeusedtorepresenttheindividualgrainsorstructureswithintheprintedobject,andtheVoronoiedgescanbeusedtorepresentthegrainboundaries.
