Abstract
Imageprocessingisveryimportantinvariousfieldssuchascomputervision,robotics,medicalimaging,andothers.MATLABisoneofthemostpopulartoolsforimageprocessingduetoitssimpleandpowerfulsyntax,andalsobecauseithasarichcollectionoffunctionsandalgorithmsspecificallydesignedforMATLABimageprocessing.Inthispaper,wewilldiscussthebasicsofMATLABimageprocessing,includingimagerepresentation,imageenhancement,imagefiltering,edgedetection,andimagesegmentation.
Introduction
Imageprocessingistheprocessingofdigitalimagesusingvariousalgorithmstoimprovethevisualappearanceorextractmeaningfulinformationfromimages.MATLABisapowerfultoolforimageprocessingbecauseofitsbuilt-infunctionsandalgorithms.MATLABprovidesarichsetofimageprocessingfunctionsandtoolboxesthatcanbeusedtoperformvarioustasksinimageprocessing.Manyofthesealgorithmsareusedinvariousfieldssuchasrobotics,remotesensing,medicalimaging,andothers.
ImageRepresentation
AnimagecanberepresentedinMATLABusingamatrixwhereeachelementofthematrixrepresentsapixelvalue.MATLABprovidesseveralfunctionsforreadingandwritingimagefilessuchasimread,imwrite,andimshow.Theimreadfunctionisusedtoreadanimagefile,theimwritefunctionisusedtowriteanimagefile,andtheimshowfunctionisusedtodisplayanimagefile.
ImageEnhancement
Imageenhancementistheprocessofapplyingvariousalgorithmstoimprovethevisualappearanceofanimage.MATLABprovidesseveralfunctionsforimageenhancementsuchashistogramequalization,contraststretching,andfiltering.Histogramequalizationisusedtoimprovethecontrastofanimagebydistributingthepixelintensitiesuniformlyovertheentirerange.Contraststretchingisusedtostretchthepixelvaluesofanimagetousethefullrangeofpixelintensities.Filteringisusedtosharpenorbluranimagebyremovingunwantednoise.
ImageFiltering
Imagefilteringistheprocessofremovingunwantednoiseorenhancingcertainfeaturesofanimagebyapplyingfilterssuchasmedian,average,Gaussian,andlaplacianfilters.Themedianfilterisusedtoremovenoisefromanimagebyreplacingeachpixelinanimagebythemedianvalueofitsneighborin
