Abstract:
Deep-seasedimentsplayavitalroleinvariousgeologicalprocessesandenvironmentaldynamics.Understandingtheadhesioncharacteristicsofthesesedimentsatbothmacroandmicroscalesisessentialforpredictingtheirtransportbehaviorandassessingtheirimpactonthemarineecosystem.Inthisstudy,weinvestigatetheadhesionpropertiesofdeep-seasedimentsusingtheDiscreteElementMethod(DEM).TheDEMisanumericalmodelingtechniquethatsimulatestheinteractionbetweendiscreteparticles,allowingustocapturethecomplexbehaviorofsedimentparticles.
Introduction:
Deep-seasedimentscoverasignificantportionoftheEarth'ssurfaceandarecomposedofvariousmineralogicalandbiologicalcomponents.Theadhesioncharacteristicsofthesesediments,whichdependonfactorssuchasgrainsize,shape,surfaceroughness,chemicalcomposition,andbiologicalactivity,greatlyinfluencetheirtransportandsettlingbehavior.Thestudyofadhesionpropertiesofdeep-seasedimentshasimportantimplicationsinfieldssuchassedimentdynamics,submarinegeology,andmarineecosystemresearch.
Methods:
TheDiscreteElementMethod(DEM)isanumericalapproachwidelyusedtomodelthebehaviorofgranularmaterials,includingsedimentparticles.DEMprovidesawaytosimulateandanalyzetheinteractionbetweenindividualparticlesandtheircollectivebehavior.Inthisstudy,wewillemployDEMtoinvestigatetheadhesioncharacteristicsofdeep-seasediments.
Results:
TheresultsobtainedfromtheDEMsimulationswillprovideinsightsintothemacroandmicro-scaleadhesionpropertiesofdeep-seasediments.Theadhesionforcesbetweensedimentparticleswillbequantified,andtheinfluenceofdifferentfactorssuchasparticlesize,shape,surfaceroughness,andchemicalcompositionwillbeanalyzed.Furthermore,thecollectivebehaviorofsedimentparticlesinresponsetoexternalforcesandtheirtransportcharacteristicswillbestudied.
