Abstract:
Thedischargeofheatedwaterintoaquaticecosystems,knownasthermaldischarge,isasignificantenvironmentalconcernassociatedwithpowergenerationfacilitieslocatednearwaterbodies.Inthispaper,weexploretheapplicationoftheDelft3DsoftwareinthenumericalsimulationofthermaldischargeattheGulfPowerPlantlocatedinabayarea.TheGulfPowerPlantischosenasacasestudytounderstandthepotentialimpactsofthermaldischargeonthesurroundingmarineenvironmentandtoevaluatepossiblemitigationmeasures.
1.Introduction
Powergenerationfacilitiesoftenusecoolingsystemsthatinvolvetakinginwaterfromnearbywaterbodiessuchasrivers,lakes,orbaystocooltheequipment.Thiswater,afterabsorbingheatfromthepowerplantprocesses,isthendischargedbackintothewaterbody,leadingtotemperatureincreasesinthereceivingenvironment.Understandingthedispersionandimpactofthisthermaldischargeiscrucialformaintainingtheecologicalbalanceofaquaticecosystems.Inthispaper,weinvestigatetheuseoftheDelft3DsoftwaretosimulatethethermaldischargeattheGulfPowerPlant.
2.Methodology
TheDelft3Dsoftwareisawidelyusedhydrodynamicmodelingtoolthatcansimulatethetransportofwater,sediment,andcontaminantsinaquaticenvironments.Thesoftwarepackageincorporatesvariousmodules,includinghydrodynamics,waves,sedimenttransport,waterquality,andecologymodels.Forthisstudy,wefocusonthehydrodynamicandwaterqualitymodules.
