Communicativecompetenceisimportantforanyonewhowishestobeabletocommunicateclearly,especiallypublicspeakersandpeoplelearningasecondlanguage.Politiciansandotherpublicspeakersoftenseekhighlevelsofcommunicativecompetencetobeabletoeffectivelyconveymeaningandexpressideastoothers.Peoplewhoarelearningasecondlanguagealsotendtofocusonthistypeofcompetencetoensuretheyunderstandsubtextandvariousaspectsofcommunicationwithinthatlanguagethatmaybesubtleandcomplex.

Theideabehindcommunicativecompetenceisthatthewaysinwhichpeoplecommunicatecanbeanalyzedandconsideredwithregardtoeffectiveness.Someoneisoftenconsideredcompetent,atleastonasurfacelevel,ifheorshecantalktosomeoneelseinawaythatisappropriateandwhichconveysmeaninginanaccurateway.Thisactualprocess,however,isoftenseenasbeingcomposedofthreebasicstepsthatoccurincommunication.Planningisavitalpartofcommunicativecompetenceasitdemonstratesthatsomeoneisabletothinkaboutcommunicationaheadoftimeandprepareforit.

2.Duringcommunication,thewayinwhichapersoncommunicatesisoftenconsideredintwoelementsregardinghisorhercommunicativecompetence.Themessagethatisdeliveredistheactualcontentthatapersonspeaks,writes,orotherwiseexpressesinsomeway.Withinthismessage,however,isthemeaningthatapersonmanagestoconvey.Someonemayfeelthathisorhermessageexpressesoneidea,buttheactualmeaningmightnotnecessarilymatchtheintentionofthemessage.
Communicativecompetenceisimportantforjustaboutanyonewhowishestocommunicatewithotherpeopleinanytypeofrelationship.Argumentsanddisagreementscanoftenbeavoidedifpeopleareabletoeffectivelyexpressmeaninginamessage.
