“Ohdear,I'mgoingtobeasblindasabat.Butwe'dbetterhurry.It'sMissLee'sclass,"saidMaray.
Atthestartofthelesson,MissLeeexplainedhowtodotheexperimenttoproducelargeeyecrystals.Thenshestartedtoquestiontheclass.NobodydaredtogiveawronganswerbecauseMissLeewasaverystrictteacherMissLeeheldupaclamp(夹具)andsaid,"Whatdoweuseisfor?Whatdowecallit?Allthegirlslookeddown,whileshelookedattheirheadsforonetopickon."Mary?"shefinallyasked.
Marywassittingatthebackoftheclass.ShestoodupandpeeredatMissLee,butshecouldnotseeclearlywhattheteacherwasholding.Shewasnervousabitanddidnotanswer.
MissLeerepeatedherquestion.Thistimeshespokemoreslowlyandtherewasangerinhervoice.
"Whatisthisusedfor?"sheasked
VimalasawstormcloudsclimbinguptoMissLee'sface.SheknewthatthestormwasabouttoburstonMary,sosheputupherhand.MissLeepaidnoattentiontoherandstaredthroughnarrowedeyesatMary,waitingforananswer.

Vimalaguessedwhatwaswrong,soshedecidedtotakearisk.Shejumpedtoherfeetandsaid,"Excuseme.MissLee.Marybrokeherglassesjustbeforethelessonstarted.Idon'tthinkshecanseetheclampclearly."Thenshesatdown,praying(祈祷)thattheceilingwouldnotfallonher.
“Oh!”MissLeesaid,alittlesurprised.ShehadthoughtthatMarywasrefusingtoanswer.
Nowthatsheunderstood,herangerfadedaway.“Thankyou,Vimala.”shesaidThensheturned
toMaryandsaid,“Comeandlookatthis.”
Maryleftherchairandwenttothefrontoftheclass.
