Thefirstpossiblesituationisthatthepatientisstillconsciousandabletoexpresshimself.Inthiscase,weshouldtalktohimandfindouthisownopinion.Ifhewishestostayinahospital,weshouldsendhimthereandtrytogetthebestmedicalcareforhimnomatterhowmuchitwillcost.Ifhewantstostayathome,weshouldshowrespectforhisopinionanddoourbestathomeforhimnomatterhowtroublesomeitmaybe.Therationaleofthisviewisthatthebestwecandoforadyingpersonistosatisfyhislastwishesexceptwhenhewantsanthanasiainacountryinwhichitisstillillegal.
Theotherpossiblesituationisthatthepatientisnolongerabletoexpresshimself.Inthiscase,itisbettertolethimstayathomeandspendhislastdayswithhisrelatives.Thisviewisbasedonthefollowingconsiderations.Thisfirstisthatsincethepatientisgoingtodieanyway,itisbetterforhimtodieathomeinsteadofaplacewherehisrelativesarenotallowedtostaywithhimallthetime.Thesecondisthatitwouldbeawasteofmoney,time,andenergytohospitalizethepatient.Thethirdisthatwhatahospitalcandoforadyingpersoncanonlybringmoresufferingtohim.Forinstance,operationsorintravenousdripsareuselessandpainfulandfistaidsappliedtohimcanonlymakehimlivelongertosuffermore.Thebestthingahospitalcandoistoreducehispainsinhislastdays,butthiscanalsobedoneathome.
Inshort,myviewisthatwhenthequestionsareconsideredobjectively,theanswerisclear:itisbetterforhim,forhisrelatives,andforsociety
