Thedesireforhigh-performance,green,sustainable,andLeadershipinEnergyandEnvironmentalDesign(LEED)-certifiedbuildingshasbecomeamajorforceintoday’sconstructionmarket.Asthehypesurroundinggreenconstructionevolves,theroleofthestructuralengineerincontributingtosustainablebuildingseemstohavebeendiminishedtothatofsimplybeingaspecifierofconstructionmaterialsratherthanadesignerofsustainablestructures.Therealissueforthestructuralengineeringprofessionisdeterminingwhatrolethestructuralengineershouldplayasgreenbuildingevolvesintoacollectivedesignandconstructionconsciousness.Theanswerissimple:thestructuralengineerneedstoemphasizethecontributionsthatgooddesigndecisionscanmaketothesustainabilityofastructure.
HistoricalPerspective
Tolookatthepresentandfutureofthegreenbuildingmovement,itisnecessarytolookathowitgottowhereitisinthefirstplace.Therehasbeensomuchtalkofsustainablethisandgreenthat—notjustintheconstructionworld,butineveryfacetoflife—thatitissometimesdifficulttorecallatimewhengreenwasnotthehottopicitistoday.Butitwasnotalwaysthiswayanditdidnothappenovernight.
Sowhendidthisconcernfortheenvironmentbegin?Throughouthistory,therehavealwaysbeenthosewhohaveappreciatedandrespectedthenaturalworld,butironically,insteadofbeingimmersedinnature,itmayactuallyhavetakenastepaway—tothetuneofaround240,000miles(386,243km)—forpeopletogaintheperspectiveofearthassomethingpreciousandvulnerable.BritishastrophysicistFredHoyleidentifiesthatmomentasthefirstphotosofearthtakenduringtheApollo11missionin1969,saying,“Somethingnewhashappenedtocreateaworldwideawarenessofourplanetasauniqueandpreciousplace.Itseemstomemorethanacoincidencethatthisawarenessshouldhavehappenedatexactlythemomentmantookhisfirststepintospace”(Nelson2009).Apictureisindeedworthathousandwords.
