Todd:OK,nowSteve,theCanadianpoliticalsystemandtheAmericanpoliticalsystemarequitedifferent.CouldyouexplaintomehowtheCanadianpoliticalsystemworks?
Steve:Sure.BasicallyinCanadathereare10provencesandthreeterritories.Wecallthethreeterritories,territoriesbecausetheyhavelessthan50,000peoplelivinginthem.They'rereallyfarnorth,whereitiscoldandobviouslynotsocomfortabletolive.TheothertenprovencesareBritishColumbia,Alberta,Saskatchewan,Manitoba,Ontario,Quebec,NewFoundland,NovaScotia,NewBrunswickandPrinceEdwardIsland.EachProvencehastheirprovincialgovernmentbutasfarasfederalgovernmentthecapitalisinOttawa,andthere'sactuallyanelectioncomingup,probablysometimethisyear.EachprovinceisgivenseatsinthefederalcabinetandseatsaregivenbasedonpopulationsoOntarioandQuebecwhichhavethelargestpopulationshavethemostseatsinFederalParliamentandsowhereveryouliveyoubasicallyvoteforthepoliticianwhoisrunninginyourparticulargeographicalarea,andthepoliticalpartywhichwinsthemostseatsformsthegovernmentthatrulesthecountry.
Todd:OK,andtheleaderofthecountrycomesfromthatparty?
Steve:Yeah,theleaderofthecountryiselectedwithintheparty.Theyelecttheleader(OK)Soeachparty,whentheywantaleader,theyhavealeadershipconvention,andtheyelectaleadertoleadthatparty,buttheleaderofthepartymustalsorunintheirownconstituencyorriding,soiftheydon'twintheycan'tbethePrimeMinister,so,yeah,themainpoliticalparties,rightnowthegovernmentisLiberalGovernment.OtherprominentpartiesaretheNewDemocraticParty,sometimescalledtheNDP,andtheNewConservativeParty.AlsoapowerfulpartyisBlocQuebecois,whichhasmostofitsseatsobviouslyinQuebec,sotherearefourmainpoliticalparties.
