RelaytechnologyisanimportantaspectoftheLongTermEvolution-Advanced(LTE-A)system.Itallowsfortheextensionofthenetworkcoverage,improvesthenetworkcapacity,andreducesnetworkcongestion.Inthispaper,wewilldiscusswhatRelaytechnologyis,itsbenefits,challenges,andthefutureofRelaytechnologyintheLTE-Asystem.
WhatisRelayTechnology?
Relaytechnologyisacommunicationprotocolthatenablesthedatatransmissionbetweentwoormorecommunicationdevices.InLTE-A,aRelaynode(RN)isusedasanintermediatenodebetweenthebasestationandtheUserEquipment(UE)toextendthecoverageandimprovethenetworkthroughput.TheRNisresponsibleforrelayingthedatafromthebasestationtotheUEorfromtheUEtothebasestation.
TherearetwotypesofRelaytechnologyusedintheLTE-Asystem,namely,Type1RelayandType2Relay.Type1Relayusesatransparentbackhaul,andtheRNcommunicateswiththebasestationoveradedicatedspectrum.Incontrast,Type2Relayusesanon-transparentbackhaul,andtheRNcommunicateswiththebasestationoverthesamespectrumastheUE.TheType2Relayrequiresamoreadvancedtechnologybecauseofitsbackhaulcomplexity.
BenefitsofRelayTechnologyintheLTE-ASystem
TheRelaytechnologyhasseveralbenefitsintheLTE-Asystem.Someofthesebenefitsinclude:
ExtendedNetworkCoverage-Relaytechnologyextendsthenetworkcoveragebyprovidinganadditionallayerofcoveragethatimprovesthesignalreceptionandtransmissioninareaswherethereislittleornocoverage.Thishelpstoprovideseamlessconnectivitytotheusersandenhancesmobilebroadbandexperience.
IncreasedNetworkThroughput-Relaytechnologyincreasesthenetworkthroughputbyprovidinganadditionalchannelfordatatransmission.TheRelaynodeactsasabufferthatstoresthedataandforwardsittothedestinationnode,thusreducingthenetworkcongestionandimprovingthenetworkperformance.
Cost-EffectiveSolution-Relaytechnologyisacost-effectivesolutiontoextendthenetworkcoverageasitusestheexistinginfrastructuretoprovideadditionalcoverage.Iteliminatestheneedforbuildingnewbasestations,whichcanbecostlyandtime-consuming.
