Abstract
StructuralaspectsofcorporatenetworkshavebeenrarelyexploredinChina.This

articleaimstohelpfillthisgapbyfocusingoninterlockingdirectorates,akey

structuralaspectofcorporatenetworks.Specifically,fromasocialembeddedness

perspective,wedescribetheregionalcorporatenetworkpatternofinterlocking

directoratesinShanghaiandGuangdong,andanalyzetherelationshipsbetweenthe

networksofdirectorshipinterlocks,firmbehavior,andregionaleconomicgrowth.We

findthatfirmsinShanghaiareembeddedwithinacohesiveand

large-component-basedcorporatenetwork,whereasfirmsinGuangdongare

embeddedwithinasporadicandsmall-component-basedcorporatenetwork.Weargue

thattheeconomicdevelopmentofShanghaimaybehighlycorrelatedwithits

corporatenetworkstructureofinterlockingdirectorates,whichfacilitatesfirms’

understandingoftheenvironment,enhancesinter-firmresourceacquisitionand

inter-firmcoordinationandcontrol.ForGuangdong,wesuggestthatfirmsmay

acquireresources,coordinateinter-firmrelationships,andeludeenvironmental

uncertaintyprimarilythroughmarketmechanismsasopposedtonetworkmechanisms.

Implicationsofthesefindingsforfutureresearcharediscussed.
