1.Introduction
Femtocellsaresmall,low-powercellularbasestationsdesignedforuseinhomeorsmallofficeenvironments.Thesebasestationsaretypicallyinstalledbytheenduser,andprovidealow-costalternativetotraditionalmacrocells.Withtheintroductionofhigh-speeddataservicessuchasHSPA(HighSpeedPacketAccess)andLTE(Long-TermEvolution),thedemandforfemtocellnetworkshasincreasedsignificantly.Inthispaper,wewilldiscusstheimplementationofamulti-coreDSP(DigitalSignalProcessor)fortheFemtocellReceiverinaWCDMA(WidebandCodeDivisionMultipleAccess)system.
2.WCDMAFemtocellReceiver
TheWCDMAsystemisawidely-usedcellularwirelesscommunicationtechnologythatsupportsbothvoiceanddataservices.TheWCDMAsystemuseswidebandCDMAtechnology,whichallowsmultipleuserstosharethesamechannelbyusingdifferentspreadingcodes.TheFemtocellReceiveristhecomponentintheWCDMAsystemwhichreceivesthesignalsfromthebasestationanddemodulatesthemintothedatastreamthatcanbeusedbythedevice.
TheFemtocellReceiverconsistsofseveralcomponents,includingafront-endmoduleforRFsignalprocessing,anA/Dconverterfordigitalsignalprocessing,adigitalmixerforfrequencyconversion,andaDSPfordemodulation.TheDSPisthemostcrucialcomponentintheFemtocellReceiver,responsiblefordemodulatingthesignalsanddecodingthedatatransmittedbythebasestation.
3.Multi-CoreDSPImplementation
Thedemandforhigh-speeddataserviceshasledtoanincreaseinthecomplexityofthedemodulationalgorithmsusedintheWCDMAsystem.Asaresult,theamountofprocessingpowerrequiredbytheDSPhasalsoincreased.Tomeetthisdemand,amulti-coreDSParchitectureisusedintheFemtocellReceiver.
Amulti-coreDSPisaprocessorthatcontainsmultiplecores,whichcanbeusedtoperformparallelprocessing.EachcoreintheDSPcanexecuteaseparatepartofthedemodulationalgorithm,allowingtheDSPtoperformmultiplecomputationssimultaneously.ThissignificantlyincreasestheprocessingspeedoftheDSP,andallowsittohandletheincreasedcomplexityofthedemodulationalgorithmsusedintheWCDMAsystem.
