Introduction
ThePhDentranceexamfornon-nativeEnglishspeakingstudentsattheChineseAcademyofSciences(CAS)isarigoroustestaimedatevaluatingtheirproficiencyintheEnglishlanguageinordertoensurethattheyhavethenecessaryskillstoeffectivelyparticipateintheirresearchprograms.Oneofthemaincomponentsofthistestisthereadingcomprehensionsection,whichassessesthelevelofunderstandingofacademictextsinEnglish.However,thequestionofwhetherthereadingcomprehensiontestaccuratelymeasuresthestudents'proficiencyinEnglishisstillasubjectofdebate.ThispaperseekstoaddressthisquestionbyexploringtheconstructvalidityoftheCASPhDentranceexamreadingcomprehensiontest.
Methods
Themethodsemployedinthisresearchinvolvedathoroughreviewoftheextantliteratureonconstructvalidityandreadingcomprehensiontests.Variousstudiesrelatedtoconstructvaliditymeasuresinstandardizedtests,includingtheuseofitemanalysis,factoranalysis,andreliabilityanalysiswerereviewed.InordertoexploretheconstructvalidityofthereadingcomprehensiontestintheCASPhDentranceexam,anonlinesurveywasconductedamongpasttest-takers.Thesurveyaimedatgatheringresponsesfromstudentswhohadformerlytakenthereadingcomprehensiontest,inquiringabouttheirperceptionofthetest'scontent,itsdifficultylevel,andwhethertheybelievedthatthetestaccuratelymeasuredtheirproficiencyinEnglish.
Results
TheresultsshowedthatthemajorityofthestudentswhorespondedtothesurveybelievedthatthetestaccuratelymeasuredtheirproficiencyinEnglish.However,somestudentsnoteddiscrepanciesinthelevelofdifficultybetweenthereadingcomprehensiontestandtheothercomponentsoftheentranceexam,suchasthewritingsection.Furthermore,severalstudentsnotedthatthecontentofthetextsusedinthereadingcomprehensiontestwasnotalwaysrelevanttotheirresearchareas,makingthetestlesseffectiveinevaluatingtheirreadingcomprehensionskillsonsubject-specifictopics.
Discussion
TheCASPhDentranceexamreadingcomprehensiontestappearstohavemoderateconstructvalidity,asitsuccessfullymeasuressomeaspectsofthestudents'proficiencyinEnglish
