Introduction
TransactionCapabilitiesApplicationPart(TCAP)isanimportantcomponentofsignalingsystemsthatareusedtotransmitsignalingmessagesbetweennetworks,inboththetraditionalcircuit-switchednetworksandthemodernpacket-switchednetworks.ThemainpurposeofTCAPistoenableadvancedtelecommunicationsservicessuchascallforwarding,roaming,numbertranslation,andothers.Inthispaper,wewilldiscusstheroleandapplicationsofTCAPinthetelecommunicationindustry.
OverviewofTCAP
TCAPisapartoftheSignalingSystem7(SS7)architecture,whichisusedincircuit-switchednetworks.TCAPisresponsibleformanagingtransactionsbetweentwoendpoints,suchasswitchesorservicenodes,thatareinvolvedindeliveringaparticularservice.Transactionsinthiscontextrefertotheexchangeofmessagesbetweentheendpoints,whichisnecessaryfortheservicetobeinitiated,executedandterminated.Thesemessagesmaybesimplequeries,responsesormorecomplexdialogsthatinvolvemultipletransactions.
TCAPislayeredontopoftheMessageTransferPart(MTP)andisstructuredintwosublayers:theTransactionLayerandtheComponentLayer.TheTransactionLayerisresponsibleformanagingtransactionsandsequencingthemessages,whiletheComponentLayerdefinesthestructureandcontentofthemessagessentwithintransactions.ThemessagessentwithinTCAPareencodedinAbstractSyntaxNotationOne(ASN.1)format,whichisusedtodefinetheformatofmessagesexchangedbetweensystems.
ApplicationsofTCAP
TheTCAPprotocolisusedinvarioustelecommunicationservices,including:
1.IntelligentNetwork(IN)Services
INservicesareadvancednetworkservicesthatallowuserstoaccessandcontrolvariousnetworkfunctionalities,suchascallforwarding,callwaiting,andcallhold.INservicesutilizeTCAPtosetuptherequiredserviceandexchangethenecessaryinformationbetweennetworknodes.
2.MobileNumberPortability(MNP)
MobileNumberPortabilityisaservicethatallowsuserstokeeptheirphonenumberwhenchangingtheirnetworkoperator.MNPservicesuseTCAPtoquerythedatabaseofthepreviousoperatorandobtaintherequestednumbertotransfertothenewoperator.
3.ShortMessageService(SMS)
SMSisamessagingse
