Supervisingotherswasalwaysatoughtask,butinthepastthatstresswasoffsetbyhopesforcareermobilityandfinancialrewards.Alongwithasizablepayraise,peoplechosenasmanagerswouldbeginanearlyautomaticclimbupthecareerladdertolucrativeexecutiveperks:stockoptions,companycars,clubmemberships,plusthekeytoexecutivewashroom.Butintoday’sglobal,morecompetitivearena,amanagersitsonaninsecureperch.Restructuringhaveeliminatedlayerafterlayerofmanagementascompaniescametoviewtheirorganizationsascollectionsofcompetenciesratherthanhierarchies.Therearefarfewerrungsonthecorporateladderformanagerstoclimb.Inaddition,managerialjobsdemandmorehoursandheadachesthaneverbeforebutofferslimfinancialpaybacksandperks.
Inanageofentrepreneurship,whenthemostpraisedpeopleinbusinessarethoselaunchingsomethingnew,managementseemslikeaninvisible,thanklessrole.Employersarelookingforpeoplewhocandothings,notforpeoplewhomakeotherpeopledothings.Managementlayoffshavedonemuchtoerodeinterestinmanagerialjobs.
