ErnestHemingway(1899—1961)TheLostGenerationDefinition:termappliedtothedisillusionedintellectualsandaesthetesoftheyearsfollowingWWI,inthe1920s,whorebelledagainstformeridealsandvaluesbutcouldreplacethemonlybydespairoracynicalhedonism.ThisincludedtheyoungEnglishandAmericanexpatriatesaswellasmenandwomencaughtinthewarandcutofffromtheoldvaluesandyetunabletocometotermswiththenewerawhencivilizationhadgonemad.Source:GertrudeStein,prefacetoTheSunAlsoRisesCommoncharacteristics:ComingofageduringtheWar,havingsomethingtodowithitDisillusionedandantagonisticagainstwarUnhappyaboutAmericancultureExpatiatesinParisMajorrepresentatives:Hemingway,Fitzgerald,E.E.Cummings,SherwoodAnderson,ThomasWolfe(Eliot,Pound)Life:bornandraisedinOakPark,IllinoisworkedforafewmonthsasareporterforTheKansasCityStarafterleavinghighschoolleftfortheItalianfronttobecomeanambulancedriverduringWorldWarIIn1918,hewasseriouslywoundedandreturnedhomewithintheyear.HiswartimeexperiencesbecamethebasisforhisnovelAFarewelltoArms.In1922,HemingwaymarriedHadleyRichardson,thefirstofhisfourwives,andthecouplemovedtoParis,whereheworkedasaforeigncorrespondent.Duringhistimethere,hemetandwasinfluencedbymodernistwritersandartistsofthe1920sexpatriatecommunityknownasthe"LostGeneration".Hisfirstnovel,TheSunAlsoRises,waspublishedin1926.AfterdivorcingHadleyRichardsonin1927,HemingwaymarriedPaulinePfeiffer;theydivorcedfollowingHemingway'sreturnfromcoveringtheSpanishCivilWar,afterwhichhewroteForWhomtheBellTolls.MarthaGellhornbecamehisthirdwifein1940;theyseparatedwhenhemetMaryWelshinLondonduringWorldWarII.Duringthewar,hewaspresentduringtheNormandyLandingsandtheliberationofParis.ShortlyafterthepublicationofTheOldManandtheSeain1952(winningPulitzerPrizeinMay1952&theNobelPrizeinLiteraturein1954),HemingwaywentonsafaritoAfrica,wherehewasalmostkilledinaplanecrashthatlefthiminpainorill-healthformuchoftherestofhislife.Duringhislaterlife,Hemingwaysufferedfromincreasingphysicalandmentalproblems.InJuly1961,hecommittedsuicidebyshootinghimself.LiteraryWor
