Thesocialphenomenonofcomplimentbehaviorexistsinvarioussocietiesandlinguisticcultures.Thecomplimentbehaviorcannotonlyenhancetherelationshipbetweencommunicatorsbutalsoconsolidateandstrengthenthesolidarityamongcommunicators.Thus,thecomplimentbehavioroperateslikesociallubricant.ComplimentresponsesinChineseandEnglishhavedifferentcharacteristicsbecausetheyareinfluencedbydifferentsocialfactors.Consequently,thestudyoncomplimenthasbeenpaidextensiveattentionto.ThisthesisaimsatinvestigatingthecharacteristicsofcomplimentresponsesinChineseandEnglish,comparingtheirdifferencesandsimilaritiesandattemptingtoanalyzethereasonswhichleadtothedifferencesandsimilaritiesfromcross-culturalperspective.BasedonJuliaGousseva’sexperiment,asimilarexperimentwasdesignedandcarriedoutbythepresentauthor.ThepurposesweretofindthefeaturesofcomplimentinChinesebyChinesestudents,todiscoversimilaritiesanddifferencesofcomplimentbetweenEnglishandChineseandtoexplorethereasonswhythedifferencesinlinguisticperformanceexist.
Thisarticleprovidesdeeperresearchonthissubjectandexaminesgenreofwrittendiscourse.MostofpreviousstudiesabroadandinChinafocusonthesyntaxandthetopicofcomplimentbehavioritself.Thisarticlealsoclaimsthatmostofthestudies,suchasitsfunction,implication,andcausesarebasedmostlyonthestudyontheoralcompliment.
