ABSTRACT

ThisapplicationreportpresentsaTMS320F240DSPsolutionforobtainingtheangular
positionandspeedofaresolver.

Aresolverisanabsolutemechanicalpositionsensorused,forexample,inservo
applications.Itisbasicallyarotatingtransformer.Thesinusoidalinputreferenceisamplitude
modulatedwiththesineandcosineofthemechanicalangle,respectively.Thesetwooutput
signalshavetobedecodedtoobtaintheangularposition.

Fordecodingtheresolveroutputsignals,abasicmethodisintroduced.Itutilizes
undersamplingandaninversetangentfunction.Toachieveahigherangularresolutionan
improvedmethod,whichaddsoversamplingtechniquesisused.Duetoanintegralinvariant
filter,whichisacombinationofanIIRandFIRfilter,thedigitizedangularpositiondoesnot
sufferanyvelocitylag.

Thankstoitsperipherals,theTexasInstrumentsTITMS320F240DSPcanbeideallyused
fordecodingthetworesolveroutputsignalsaswellasforgeneratingtheinputreference
frequency.ThehardwareinterfacingoftheresolvertotheTMS320F240isshownandthe
softwarerealizationoftheimprovedmethodontheTMS320F240isdocumented.All
softwareroutinesareC-compatible.Theangularresolutionachievablewiththe
TMS320F240isupto14bits,ataCPUloadingof13%.

Thus,theTMS320F240willeliminatethecostfortheexternalresolver-to-digitalconversion
IC,sincethealgorithmrunsinadditiontothemotorcontroltask.
